This is my first plein air painting of the season. I drove over to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm east of us this morning and spent about an hour and a half walking through the fields and working on this painting. It was beautiful weather and not too crowded in the middle of the week. I was the first one to park in the far lot. This year they planted the south fields. I walked down the east side and picked a somewhat isolated spot to sit and paint. I was looking west with the sun at my back.
I didn’t carry my paint box and tripod. Instead I put my supplies and paper pad into a shoulder bag designed to carry a small laptop. It was very easy to carry along with a small folding three-legged stool and my pocket camera. The setup worked great. I set the bag in my lap and put the paper pad on top of the bag. I could reach into the bag to pull out my small box of paint sticks, my brush pen case, a waterbrush, a pencil, and a piece of paper towel as needed.
I started with a loose pencil sketch. I then used the Gel Sticks to paint in the shapes working from lightest colors to darkest colors. Next I added details with the colored brush pens. Finally I used the waterbrush to blend pigment into left over white areas.
